Royal Pleco 5-6" L190
Common name: Royal panaque, royal pleco
Scientific name: Panaque nigrolineatus
Distribution: Amazon and Orinoco rivers and tributaries
Habitat: Dense bogwood tangles in fast-flowing waters
Temperature: 76 – 82°F
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Adult size: 16 inches
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, will take algae wafers and blanched vegetables. This fish is a wood-eater and driftwood must be available in the aquarium for it to rasp on.
Conspecifics: Can be territorial with other members of its species. If keeping multiple, provide ample hiding spots and pieces of driftwood.
Tankmates: Peaceful with most fish. Its large size and reclusive habits makes it suitable in tanks with larger or more aggressive inhabitants.
Notes: Panaques have evolved spoon-shaped teeth to carve away at sunken bogwood in the wild, consuming both the wood fibers and the variety of algae, fungi, and bacterial biofilms growing on them. In captivity, they should be provided large pieces of driftwood to both hide in and feed off of.
