Common name: African bullhead
Scientific name: Lophiobagrus cyclurus
Distribution: Lake Tanganyika
Habitat: Caves and crevices among the jumbled, rocky shores
Temperature: 76 – 80°F
pH: 7.5 – 9.0
Adult size: 3 inches
Diet: Unfussy feeder that accepts most dried fare supplemented by live or frozen foods.
Conspecifics: Does well on its own or in a group as long as sufficient hiding spots are provided.
Tankmates: Peaceful and suitable with most unaggressive tankmates. Small fish may be eaten.
Notes: Lophiobagrus cyclurus is the smallest member of its genus, all of which are found in Lake Tanganyika. Claims that it secretes a toxic mucus when stressed are all based on a single statement in Pierre Brichard’s Fishes of Lake Tanganyika (1978), and there is little evidence that this poses a real danger to tankmates.
