GOLD DESERT GOBY
Common name: Desert goby
Scientific name: Chlamydogobius eremius
Distribution: Lake Eyre basin in central Australia
Habitat: Artesian springs, ephemeral streams, and other waterholes surrounding the uninhabitably salty Lake Eyre.
Temperature: 74 – 82°F
pH: 7.0 – 8.5
Adult size: 2.5 inches
Diet: Unfussy omnivore that will readily take all sorts of dried, frozen, and live foods
Conspecifics: Can be territorial with other members of its species, especially spawning males. Provide ample hiding spaces and cover.
Tankmates: Peaceful with small community fish, though may be somewhat territorial with other bottom dwellers.
Notes: Chlamydogobius eremius have evolved to become remarkably resistant to extreme variations in temperature, pH, and salinity caused by flooding and drying of the small desert pools they inhabit in the wild. They do well in brackish water, but live just fine without salt as long as the water is fairly hard.
